Trivia...Again

Who said this, "...the outdated federal prohibition" of medical marijuana was "corrupting the intent of state laws and depriving thousands of glaucoma and cancer patients of the medical care promised them by their state legislatures". This person also stated, "...the hysteria over marijuana's social abuse" has prevented a "factual and balanced assessment of marijuana's use as a medicant". Answer to this trivia question at the bottom of this column. No peeking ahead, now.

Are you one of those who want to keep organized labor out of politics for whatever reasons you might have? Are you just as insistent that business be kept out of politics? Why not? In the 1996 elections, organized labor spent a total of $58.1 million on direct individual and PAC contributions and soft money donations. Corporate America spent $653.4 million, eleven times as much with over 63% going to conservative candidates. Now that you know the facts, are you able to change your opinion? Didn't think so.

Remember the hoopla over all of the campaign contributors the White House allowed to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery? After all of the front page headlines and editorials in America's "liberal media", do you have even the foggiest notion of how many were actually proven to have been illegally buried in our nation's foremost cemetery? None. That's right, other than one fellow who was buried there by mistake owing to his own fabricated war record, not one single instance was uncovered. Now, correct me if I'm wrong but was there absolutely no speeches or headlines or editorials apologizing for these lies and unfounded accusations from the right or its media? Just wondering.

Amount of alleged free tickets and favors given by Don Tyson, owner of Tyson Chicken, which the Republican Congress has indicted Mike Epsy for - $35,000. Cost of the trip to London by Newt Gingrich and paid for by Atlantic Richfield (who has legislation before Congress that would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drills) - $35,000. Number of calls by Congress to investigate Gingrich - zero. Gingrich's astoundingly insensitive statement regarding the first class accommodations during the trip, "It was wonderful! Everyone should travel like that".

"It was once said that the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life; the sick, the needy and the handicapped." (Hubert H. Humphrey). America is failing this moral test completely.

Did you realize that the actual cause of the death of Princess Diana and the two others was because of her divorce from Prince Charles? It's true, according to the Claremont Institute, a conservative "think" tank. Their argument goes like this; the divorce caused a scandal which, of course, caused the paparazzi to follow her wherever she went which resulted in her death and the deaths of the others. Their exact words are, "If Charles and Diana had been doing [their marital] duty together, as they swore before God, the world, and each other to do, they would both be alive...If there is no scandal, then the scandal-mongers have little to do." Now, not only is that a stretch of intellectual reasoning to begin with but it leaves us with two questions. First, what is the marital history of those who wrote this silly statement and have any of them ever been separated or divorced and, secondly, the last part of the quote doesn't hold up due to the right's constant attacks on the President of which none have ever been proven true, so far, even though the conservatives have tried desperately to create some sort of scandal on a daily basis.

Another ridiculous religious group which is trying to pass itself off as a "civil liberties organization" has been exposed. The Rutherford Institute was exposed by Jennifer Bradley in an article in the "American Prospect" as another in the long line of far right religious foundations which gladly lie about their focus in order to pass as a place of intelligent thought (and escape paying their fair share of taxes). This group, which claims to provide legal assistance for, "1. Defending the sanctity of human life; 2. Preserving religious expression in the public schools; 3. Upholding religious freedom in the work place; 4. Securing parental rights to direct the upbringing and education of their children; and 5. Protecting churches and other religious institutes from undue government intrusion." now represents Paula Jones in her sex harassment claim against the President. Now just exactly where in their charter does she fit? Could it be that this inane little group is just another of the many fronts created to act the part of the right's nasty little attack dogs against the President and anyone else who actually has a mind of their own? That, obviously, would be my guess.

(Answer to the trivia question: Congressman Newt Gingrich in a 1982 letter to the Journal of the American Medical Association. Weird beyond belief, huh?!? This from the moron who spent most of 1992 degrading Clinton for not inhaling. Maybe Newt was stoned back in 1982? Maybe in 1992, too? Maybe in 1998?)
