Trivia 109

That paragon of Christian love and tolerance, Pat Robertson has called down "terrorist bombs, earthquakes, tornadoes and possibly a meteor" on Orlando, Florida. The city's crime? They are hosting a Gay Days celebration. Could someone please explain to me one of two questions? First, why does anyone take this imbecile seriously. Second, do those who do take him seriously ever remove their white sheets and hoods for a breath of fresh air?

One side question about Robertson's ordering God to do his ridiculous biding; if none of the horrible things Robertson has called down on the city occurs, does that mean that God likes homosexuals but not Pat Robertson? Just wondering.

An interesting juxtaposition occurred on a Los Angeles radio station a few weeks back. The traffic announcer had just finished giving a SigAlert warning drivers to avoid a particular city street because a pot hole had developed that was causing an enormous number of flat tires. The announcer then segued into the news program where the very first item was about a proposal by Gov. Pete Wilson to cut the state's car tax (vehicle license fee) which is dedicated to repairing the roads in California.

Another study in unnoticed irony was the listing of "Action Items" for the 6/3/98 session of the House of Representatives. The first was a motion to again attempt to further the Republican Party's insane drive toward their vaporous "smaller government" by dismantling many of the regulations developed over the years by the Commerce Dept. The very next item was to, again, try desperately to regulate the bodies of women by passing another of their failed laws forcing America's female teenagers to get a judge's permission to have an, otherwise, legal abortion. Further down the list was a vote on whether to allow to be placed on the floor the silliness of their anti-flag burning amendments to our Constitution. Once again, these silly little people expose just exactly what their true definition of "smaller government" truly means; we want to destroy everything good and decent about America and replace it with our narrow- minded moralistic nonsense. By the way, all three items were voted down and/or delayed until after Congress' summer vacation break. Whew!!!!

A wonderful quote that I wanted to share with you all comes from Will Durst in The Progressive. "They're shooting John Glenn into space. Now, don't get me wrong; it's not that I have a problem with orbiting politicians. Au contraire. I would just prefer to save the taxpayers some time and a lot of money by sending them all up at once."

Another of great quote from Mr. Durst is, "Congress renamed National Airport after Ronald Reagan, the guy who fired all of the air traffic controllers. It's like naming an organ- donor bank after Jeffrey Dahmer". Hee hee!!!!

On a far more somber note, the reason Jim McDougal, the Clinton's Whitewater partner and about the only person Kenneth Starr's $40 million witch hunt has caught in its absurd net, died while in prison was a simple case of gross medical negligence by the prison staff. As a condition of his imprisonment, McDougal was required to submit to random urine tests for illegal drugs (although there was never any indication nor proof that he had ever used them). As he was on the heart medication digitalis and Prozac, both having the unfortunate side effect of an inability to urinate, he could not provide a sample within the arbitrary two hour time limit the prison enforced. Because of his inability to pee on command, McDougal was placed in solitary confinement where all of his medication was taken from him. After strip searching him and doing a full cavity search (if you don't know what that means, don't ask, you don't want to know), he was placed in a cell where he was ignored for more then eleven hours before a guard reported that McDougal wasn't responding when spoken to through the "talk hole" in the cell's door. Only then were medical personnel called who, after an hour, took him out on a stretcher and declared him dead.

In other words, the prison system that Kenneth Starr and his fellow far right radicals so worship murdered a man because he couldn't urinate on command. Anyone with even a semblance of a caring heart could only call this another in the long line of unconstitutionally cruel and inhuman punishments handed out by the latest Republican leader of a political inquisition, Kenneth Starr and everyone who ever voted to allow him to trash and ignore everything America stood for prior to 1980.

We'll discuss some more of the insanity that America has come to think of as normal next time. As it has always been, it is the responsibility of the few of us who still use our minds to try constantly to protect our nation from the insane attacks of the radical right and their minions in the oxymoron "Religious Right". They have absolutely no respect for the constitution except when they want to add their stupid and poorly thought out amendments.
