Morals?  Whose Morals?

I've been hearing a lot lately from some of the right wing nut jobs that seem to spend their life looking for anyone who doesn't share their narrow, mean spirited, violence loving and greed driven political beliefs in order to accuse me of truly horrific and bestial sex practices (I would NOT want to know what goes on inside their little peanut brains late at night!) among so many other insults, none of which address whatever political point they think they were trying to make.

One of the very few declarations that they make that can be addressed in any way by a sane human being is that Jesus would have voted for Bush because Bush was the "Morals Candidate".  Since that is the only series of words that can be responded to without lowering myself into the feces infested mental swamps they inhabit, I thought a look at what an intelligent, spiritual and progressive mind might offer as a set of moral standards might be in order.  Since I have become a HUGE fan of the well-known prophets that this sorry species has been fortunate enough to have within our midst throughout history, I returned to their teachings for some ideas as to how to describe what "morals" should entail in this sick and degenerate world of ours in 2005 and beyond.

These magnificent thinkers and teachers and prophets and, well, stunningly progressive individuals are Jesus and Buddha and the early Mohammed and Einstein and so many others that the list is too long and some of the names too forgotten these days to include them.  I won't bore you with comparisons between the Republicans and the rest of humanity or get too deep into the overall spiritual thoughts because, if you're capable of reading this you're probably not a Republican anyway, so you'll know as we go along the general thoughts I am following.  Oh, and if you are a Republican and you're having someone read this to you and explain the big four and five letter words, you won't be happy with the conclusions so you'd best go listen to that rabid little muffin Ann Coulter or your gods Limbaugh and O'Reilly.  Otherwise you might learn something and we both know how much agony that causes your tiny reptilian brain.

Let's begin with the definition of the word "moral", itself.

According to Merriam Webster's on-line dictionary:

Main Entry: 1mor·al
Pronunciation: 'mor-&l, 'mär-
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Latin moralis, from mor-, mos custom
1 a : of or relating to principles of right and wrong in behavior : ETHICAL <moral judgments> b : expressing or teaching a conception of right behavior <a moral poem> c : conforming to a standard of right behavior d : sanctioned by or operative on one's conscience or ethical judgment <a moral obligation> e : capable of right and wrong action <a moral agent>

We find that the main definition uses the words "principles", "right and wrong" and "ethical" as the core definition so we'll work on that foundation.  Who, then, decides what, exactly, all of this adds up to?  Well, according to the far right fundamentalist Republicans, they claim that Jesus is their guide.  In as much as these maniacs, I mean, conservative Americans want to claim him and his teachings as their source for their version of morals, let's work on that assumption.

These quotes won't be exhaustive both because the chosen words will pretty much explain what I mean, as well as I'm not capable of quoting anything but Jesus and a few other selected passages and ignoring the narrow minded fluff that Republicans rely on to support their hate and greed and, well, their entire political philosophy, such as it is.

What are the main issues that have reared their ugly heads since the appointment of Bush and his gang of thugs?  Let's look at them and, just to make it fun, follow each one with a quote or two (or many) from Jesus.

The invasion and massacre of the Iraqi people.  Bush claims that he has a moral right to defend America from "tururists" and the like.  Therefore, according to his view of the world and religious moral stance, he has the right to invade and conquer any nation that he thinks might possibly, someday, under the right circumstances, and with the best possible scenario, attack "Murica".  Well, actually, even that has its limitations since the nation that was primarily responsible for the worst terrorist attack on American soil would be Saudi Arabia and there isn't a chance in hell that Bush is going to risk pissing off that nation's owners since they control his profit margin from oil.

Nevertheless, let's look at what Jesus might have to say on the subject (warning, some quotes are applicable to more than one issue so you'll have the joy of reading these wonderful words again and again).

Matthew 5:9     Blessed [are] the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Matthew 5:7     Blessed [are] the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Matthew 5:19     Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:38     Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

Matthew 5:39     But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Matthew 5:43     Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

Matthew 5:44     But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.

I John 4:16     God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

Matthew 5:5    Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Luke 6:29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the [one] cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not [to take thy] coat also.

Luke 6:30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask [them] not again.

Matthew 6:14-15   "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses neither will your father forgive your trespasses."

How about the sick, depraved and almost sexual love that Bush and his gang of thugs, as well as those who bribe him using "campaign contributions", have towards mere possessions?  Does Jesus approve of money for any reason?  Does he tell us to adore and worship those whose only talent is amassing material wealth?  What, in fact, does he tell us to do with our wealth?  Does he tell us to bribe politicians in order to gain even more wealth?  How about the reality that there is a larger proportion of Americans living in poverty today than at anytime since the Great Stock Market Crash?  Actually, he's pretty clear about it all.

Matthew 6:24     No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Mark 10:21     Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

Mark 10:23   And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

Mar 10:24    And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

Mar 10:25    It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Luke 6:20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed [be ye] poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

Luke 6:30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask [them] not again.

Sell whatever thou hath, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

I Corinthians 13:13
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Luke 12:48
For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.

Bible , Acts 20:35  It is more blessed to give than to receive.

II Corinthians 9:7
Every man according as he purpose in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

I Timothy 6:10
The love of money is the root of all evil.

I Corinthians 13:1
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

Matthew 6:1  "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven."

Matthew 6:2  "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full."

How about the horrors we visit on children by leaving them without medical care or proper food or a decent education not offering after and before school programs or by bombing while they lay on their sick beds in charity hospitals in Falluja, Iraq?  The right wing bozos are all hot and bothered about children when they're just a mass of cells within its mother's womb but the instant it emerges into this world the child has only hunger and pollution and fear and war and a world where TV takes the place of real thinking and the joy of neighborhoods.  What might Jesus say about the children?

Matthew 25:40   "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethern, ye have done it unto me".

Matthew 7:11  If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

Mark 9:37   “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

The simple fact that America remains the industrialized nation that has the highest percentage of billionaires and the highest percentage of its population living in poverty should sicken anyone not anally attached to wealth and hatred of the poor.  Since Republicans claim to be Christians, let's look at a few more words from Jesus and the bible on the subject.

    For instance,

Proverbs 14:31  "He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth Him hath mercy on the poor".

Proverbs 19:17  , "He that hath pity upon the poor lendth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will He pay him again"

Proverbs 21:13, "Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard".

Proverbs 22:16, "He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want".

Proverbs 31:9  "Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy".

Acts 20:35  "I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He said, It is more blessed to give than receive".

Matthew 25:40   "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethern, ye have done it unto me".

Okay, let's take a look at a few more of the teachings of Jesus that Christians are required to follow but which most choose not to.  These are just to show that the blown dried dummies that keep begging for money on TV or at the altar or anywhere else are, to say the least, repulsive and unnecessary.

Matthew 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites [are]: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Obviously, if an agnostic fool like myself can find these passages with such ease, one would think that the nimrods on the far, far, far right would be able to as well.  Of course, if they acknowledged these words then they would be forced to make the greatest choice of their lives; either continue on as a Republican with all of the evil and immoral and foul smelling baggage that comes with that burden, or recognize that all great teachers are the antithesis of the Republican Party.  It is, on every single level and in every single spiritual journey, IMPOSSIBLE to live a decent, loving, god centered life as a Republican.  That doesn't leave any wiggle room nor does it allow for the false beliefs that Jesus would ever vote for a half wit, miserable, violent, self-centered, greedy, anti-Christian, cowardly bozo like Bush.  Or is that too harsh?  Nah!!

There are undoubtedly many, many passages that I could have added but, the truth is, this is what I found with just a few minutes worth of research and I figure if you need more proof that Republicans and their sick philosophy has zero relationship to the real teachings of Christ then there is no chance at all of softening the greed and hate that you must feel each and every day of your miserable existence.  You would have my pity but I reserve my pity for the tiny victims of your disgusting policies.

Let's finish up with one of the most powerful messages ever handed to humanity.  It is called the Beatitudes and it pretty much sums up the message that Jesus taught and that Republicans are loathe to admit.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
